For ages 15 and up. This class is an intro to Bollywood movement, expression, rhythm and energy. Advanced beginning and intermediate dancers will learn to layer hands and eyes, hips and feet to create choreography that tells a story, invokes a mood, and evokes life’s changes through subtle shifts in emotion and style.
JULIE MARQUES BIO
Julie started her dance career as a young girl in Classical Western dance. She continued through college at UC Santa Cruz until studying abroad in Nepal where she studied Classical Nepalese, folk and Bollywood dance. She also studied some Kathak and Odissi dance. Julie is creator of Lila Devi Teen and Amrita Dance Companies. She has taught, choreographed and performed for twenty years.
Following the intermediate class, Amrita Dance Company meets for till 8:45pm to rehearse and refine dances to be performance ready. Students who take the 8 week Bollywood series will be eligible to audition at the end of each series.
WHAT TO EXPECT
Come to class in comfortable, stretchy clothing. Generally Bollywood is barefoot, although some fusion dances may require jazz, tennis shoes or some other kind of footwear. Julie’s fusion classes are distinctly different and unique to her years of teaching and dancing. She emphasizes a style or genre of dance during each eight week week series. Her styles range from Classical Indian to Contemporary and Folk with Infusions of Jazz, Salsa, Hip Hop and Belly dance. Students will grow in her style from simple to complex choreography that is fast, fun, original and transformative!
